Our homies at Bluetile Skateboards are sponsoring an amazing artshow at the Columbia Museum of Art in connection with Pour it Now and the City of Columbia. The show runs from January 7 to March 8 and features the works of internationally acclaimed artists, Kevin E. Taylor and Jason Filipow, along with additional Skate and Create artists. Both Taylor and Filipow attribute their inspiration to growing up within the skateboarding scene in South Carolina. Taylor writes…
our creative life was nurtured through skateboarding. Little did we know, but the act of improvising hours of fun from society’s detritus would train our minds to explore the potentiality of our surroundings. Skateboarding was a self expressive mode, in which we developed individualities and preferences. Through it and the surrounding atmosphere of counter culture, we learned the mechanics of introspection. It was something we did together, but by ourselves. We all had our distinctive styles then, just as we do now. “
The Skate & Create series began out of the necessity to build awareness and raise funds for a skate park in Columbia and it’s close to fruition with the help of a grant from the Tony Hawk foundation. As part of the exhibition the designs and blueprints of the new Owens Field Skatepark will be on display. It’s sure to be an interesting event, plus how often do you see a skate related exhibition at a legit museum. Well worth the hour drive. Don’t miss it. Here’s an article from The State newspaper about the event.
Opening reception is January 9 from 5-7 p.m. For more information, directions, etc. call Bluetile (803-376-1880), Columbia Museum of Art (803-799-2810) or visit Pour it Now. You can preview Taylor’s work at kevinearltaylor.com, and to see some of Filipow’s visit myspace.com/mygarageland or his blog at julietromeofoxtrot.blogspot.com.

If you’ve been skating for awhile you probably have ridden a Todd Francis graphic at one point or another. He’s worked in the industry for over 15 years designing graphics for notable companies such as Real, Anti-Hero, Stereo, New Deal and Element. Back in September he had a solo show at 3131 gallery in San Francisco featuring original line-art from 1993-2008. Tweaker Zine has nice slideshow of some of the artwork. And here is a link to a youtube video of the show.
Stereo Skateboards has a “hot seat” interview with the legendary skateboard artist. Here is a clip about a series of decks he did for Element. And here’s a signature series commerical for Fuel TV he did. If you are interested in practical graphic design or skate history I encourage you to check these out and learn a little about the man/stories behind the ink.
